Primary Sex Organ: The Testes
  • ​The testes (singular: testis) are the primary male sex organs located outside the abdominal cavity within a pouch called the scrotum.They perform two vital functions:
  • Spermatogenesis: Production of male gametes (sperms).
  • Endocrine Function: Secretion of male sex hormones (androgens, primarily testosterone).
Location & Scrotum Function (Temperature Regulation)
  • Testes are situated outside the main body cavity to maintain an optimal temperature for sperm formation .
  • Spermatogenesis requires a temperature 2 to 2.5 degree Celsius lower than normal human body temperature 37 degree Celsius.
  • The scrotal wall contains smooth muscles (Dartos and Cremaster muscles) that contract in cold conditions (pulling testes closer to the body for warmth) and relax in warm conditions (moving testes away to dissipate heat).

Internal Anatomy: Testicular Lobules & Seminiferous Tubules
  • In adults, each testis is oval in shape with a length of 4 to 5 cm and a width of 2 to 3 cm.
  • The region outside the seminiferous tubules is known as the interstitial space. It contains Testicular lobule and Seminiferous tubule .
  • Each testis contains approximately 250 compartments called testicular lobules.
  • Each testicular lobule houses 1 to 3 highly coiled seminiferous tubules, which are the actual site of sperm production.

Cell Types inside Seminiferous Tubules
  • ​Each seminiferous tubule is lined on its inside by a specialized germinal epithelium consisting of two distinct cell types: Spermatogonia and Sertoli cell.
  • ​Spermatogonia is Male germ cell and Diploid (2n) in nature . 90 o0 It undergo meiotic divisions (Spermatogenesis) to form haploid (n) spermatozoa (sperms).
  • Sertoli Cells or Nurse Cells Sustentacular Cells Provides structural support, nourishment, and physical protection to developing germ cells.

Epididymis:
  • ​A long, highly coiled tube located along the posterior surface of each testis.
  • It is site of temporary storage of sperms where they undergo physiological maturation and gain motility.
​Vas Deferens & Ejaculatory Duct:
  • ​Vas deferens ascends into the abdomen, loops over the urinary bladder, receives a duct from the seminal vesicle, and opens into the urethra as the ejaculatory duct.
  • It Stores and transports sperms from the testis to the outside through the urethra.
​Urethra & Urethral Meatus:
  • ​Urethra originates from the urinary bladder and extends through the penis to its external opening called the urethral meatus.
  • It ​Serves as a common passage (Urogenital duct) for both urine and semen.

  • ​The male accessory glands include a paired Seminal Vesicles, a single Prostate Gland, and paired Bulbourethral Glands (Cowper's Glands).
  • These glands secrete fluids and make semen along with the sperm.
  • Secretion of these glands is called seminal plasma which is rich in Fructose, Calcium and some enzymes.

Tissue Anatomy & Mechanism of Erection
  • The penis consists of three cylindrical masses of erectile tissue surrounded by fibrous connective tissue:
  • Corpora Cavernosa are two Tin number and form dorsolateral masses that form the bulk of the erectile tissue.
  • Corpus Spongiosum is A single mid-ventral mass surrounding the penile urethra.
Mechanism of Erection:
  • Vascular spaces in the erectile tissues fill with blood during sexual arousal under parasympathetic nerve stimulation.
  • This engorgement causes the tissue to enlarge, stiffen, and become erect.
Glans Penis & Foreskin (Prepuce)
  • Glans Penis is the enlarged, highly sensitive terminal end of the corpus spongiosum.
  • Prepuce (Foreskin) is a loose, retractable fold of skin covering the glans penis.
